Paint Brushes, Spackle and Elbow Grease: Giving Back with the United Way
As part of our ongoing #EmeraldCubeCares initiative, we rolled up our sleeves and rolled out some paint this past July, giving back to our local community in Atlanta, GA. During our second year of service with the United Way, the EmeraldCube team participated in a day of giving back by renovating three town home units which house previously homeless women and their families.
In conjunction with the United Way of Greater Atlanta, The Mary Hall Freedom House is a national leader in recovery, housing and support services, helping women break the cycle of addiction, poverty & homelessness. Founded in 1996, thousands of stories of women and children have been rewritten at Mary Hall Freedom House by empowering them to create substance abuse-free generations to come.
EmeraldCube donated the supplies and labor for the service day, as our team prepped, painted and reassembled three town home units, including the hanging of new blinds and assembly of patio furniture. The transformation of the units from start to finish was amazing and rewarding, resulting in a clean fresh look for each apartment!
A special thank you to the United Way and the Mary Hall Freedom House for allowing us to participate. It was an incredible day for our whole team, as we continue to fulfill our company vision of making a difference in our local community through volunteerism. #EmeraldCubeCares
A “Cuber” Gives Back in Athens
This past February, I was given the opportunity to serve abroad in Athens, Greece. I joined a team of 29 students and 5 other adults from the Greater Atlanta Christian School, where I attended school. We traveled to Greece to serve with Hellenic Ministries, an organization that seeks to serve refugees in Athens. The group from Greater Atlanta Christian School was sent with the task of encouraging and serving the refugees, along with offering support to the staff of Hellenic Ministries.
Many of the refugees in Greece have fled their war-ridden countries in hopes of a better life for themselves and their families. In Greece, these individuals from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Israel, Jordan, Sudan, and Afghanistan, are overlooked and forgotten by the society around them. As the GACS team worked with these individuals, faces, stories and relationships began to take shape, ones that will last more than 10 days.
The goal of the trip to Athens, Greece, was to bring support and encouragement to the people of Hellenic Ministries and the refugees they serve. By spending time in conversation, serving meals, delivering groceries, and hosting a day of fun and games for children, the team from Greater Atlanta Christian School spent the week showing love to those of Athens.
– The EmeraldCube team would like to thank David Roberts (Business Development Manager, EmeraldCube) for volunteering his time and making a difference in the lives of others.
Vine City Code Crew: Bringing Technology to Inner City Youth
Nestled in the heart heart of Atlanta, a resilient, rightfully proud and under resourced community named Vine City lies. A once vibrant and flourishing town, Vine City fell on hard times in the 70s and 80s, giving little hope to those which now inhabit the area. Because of the vision of our Director of Business Intelligence, Jeremy Harms, the youth of this city have recently had the opportunity to put their talent to work and experience technology for the first time. Through Jeremy’s passion and dedication, and the overwhelming contributions and donations of EmeraldCube and people within the technology industry, Jeremy has launched “Vine City Code Crew”. Using the credit-card sized Raspberry Pi computer, Jeremy and industry guest volunteers are teaching boys and girls the basics of computer programming. In addition, the Crew has had the opportunity to go on field trips for additional hands on experience to visit creative tech companies such as MailChimp, which happens to be exactly one mile from Vine City. Thanks to Jeremy’s vision, the support of organizations like EmeraldCube, and the passion of kids, Vine City Code Crew has been a huge success and “Phase 2” is now in the works! For a full recap of this #EmeraldCubeCares program, please read our blog.
The EmeraldCube Solutions team proudly participated in their first #EmeraldCubeCares day on July 23, 2014. In conjunction with United Way and The Easter Seals Foundation, the team worked together to refurbish a playground that is part of an early learning facility for low income and physically challenged children in Atlanta. For 90 years, Easter Seals has given children the chance to live, learn, work and play, while growing up in an environment that focuses on the needs of the child, as well as service, education, outreach and advocacy.
While on site, the team took part in cleaning, painting, and restoring their main playground. This included building and installing a new sandbox, play houses, and a wagon. The team also cleaned up the surrounding area and painted a chalkboard wall, giving the playground a whole new interactive look and feel.
The chance to give back to the community is a core value of the EmeraldCube Solutions team. In return for their service, Easter Seals dedicated the playground to EmeraldCube Solutions. The team looks forward to participating in another #EmeraldCubeCares day in the near future!
Running to Raise Dollars for St.Jude’s Children’s Hospital
During the last weekend of July, team member Jeff Brown participated in an 85-person multi leg running relay between St.Louis, MO and Peoria, IL, to raise funds for St.Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. For five years, Jeff has actively raised funds for this very important organization. This year, EmeraldCube Solutions sponsored Jeff and their relay team as they ran 187 miles, ending their journey at the national St. Jude telethon. Their team raised $115,000 to donate to the hospital. Way to go Jeff, #EmeraldCubeCares!
